The IUPAC nomenclature of organic chemistry uses the numerical prefixes derived from Greek, except for the prefix for 9 (as mentioned) and the prefixes from 1 to 4 (meth-, eth-, prop-, and but-), which are not derived from words for numbers.
Webster's 3rd Unabridged shows fewer than four columns of "in-n*" words, and fewer than five of those words are negative, "innumerable" being the most familiar. For most, the "in" supplies the sense of "inherent". (However, if an "in" prefix is appropriate -- for negation or innateness -- the "n" should definitely be doubled.) –
11 Ιαν 2011 · In the linguistic term metathesis meaning that a consonant changes its position before or after a vowel as in bird and to breed - in metathesis meta- expresses the idea of change. I could add more examples where meta- has still other meanings. So, when you have a Greek foreign word with meta- you have to get information about the meaning of meta-.

Jul 30, 2015 at 15:34. @JoeCorneli This is why I added "if used in a sense of time". A perimeter is clearly space, not time. There is nothing "during" a meter.

31 Οκτ 2014 · She was right, then I asked her other examples of the words using negative prefix “a,” which I later found Greek origin. She said she knew some, but can’t reel off them off-hand. Coming home, I tried to find out the samples through Google Search by naively inputting keywords like “negative prefix, a, words." It didn’t work.

13 Ιουν 2013 · 15. The suffix -logy means a branch of learning, or study of a particular subject. The suffix -nomy means a system of rules or laws, or body of knowledge of a particular subject. These two are often intertwined as you might expect. (Note that -ology and -onomy are alternate forms which include the connecting vowel -o-.)
