Progesterone (P4) is an endogenous steroid and progestogen sex hormone involved in the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and embryogenesis of humans and other species. [ 1 ] [ 13 ] It belongs to a group of steroid hormones called the progestogens [ 13 ] and is the major progestogen in the body.

Introduction: The aim of this article is to review the physiology of progesterone and focus on its physiological actions on tissues such as endometrium, uterus, mammary gland, cardiovascular system, central nervous system and bones.
Progesterone is a hormone produced by steroidogenic tissues—the corpus luteum and the placenta. Progesterone prepares the endometrium for implantation of the oocyte, prevents ovulation, and facilitates increased glandular tissue in the mammary glands.
