International normalised ratio (INR) is a standardised version of this test, commonly used with patients on anticoagulants.

Tests of the Coagulation Cascade. These in vitro tests—the activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), prothrombin time (PT), and thrombin time (TT)—measure the time elapsed from activation of the coagulation cascade (Figure 157.1) at different points to the generation of fibrin.
The prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and bleeding time (BT) are screening tests for hemostasis. Typical indications for ordering these tests include hemorrhagic symptoms, monitoring of anticoagulant therapy, and “routine” preoperative screening.
Interpretation. The typical reference range is between 25 seconds and 33 s (depending on laboratory). Longer times of up to 50 s do apply to infants. Shortening of the PTT is considered to have little clinical relevance, but some research indicates that it might increase risk of thromboembolism. [4] .

More specifically, prothrombin time is used to evaluate the extrinsic and common pathways of coagulation, which helps detect deficiencies of factors II, V, VII, and X and low fibrinogen concentrations.
