7 Σεπ 2024 · Protraction & Retraction. Protraction describes the anterolateral movement of the scapula on the thoracic wall that allows the shoulder to move anteriorly. In practice, this is the movement of ‘reaching out’ to something.
3 Νοε 2023 · Protraction happens with the pull of the serratus anterior and pectoralis minor muscles, while retraction is produced by the horizontal and ascending parts of the trapezius muscle, and rhomboid minor and major muscles.
Protraction of the scapula occurs when the shoulder is moved forward, as when pushing against something or throwing a ball. Retraction is the opposite motion, with the scapula being pulled posteriorly and medially, toward the vertebral column.
In this anatomy lesson, I’m going to demonstrate protraction and retraction, which are special body movements in anatomy that most commonly involve the scapulae (shoulder blades).
The scapula also has available translatory motions of scapular elevation/depression and protraction/retraction. The linkage of the scapula to the AC and SC joints prevents scapular motions both from occurring in isolation and from occurring as true translatory motions.
