Spondylolysis is caused by tiny cracks where the bones in your spine link together. It usually causes pain in your lower back. Most people with spondylolysis are able to return to sports and activities as soon as their vertebrae heal and their pain goes away.

Cause. The cause of spondylolysis remains unknown, however many factors are thought to contribute to its development. The condition is present in up to 6% of the population, the majority of which usually present asymptomatically. [7] .

Typically, this defect results from trauma or chronic repetitive loading and hyperextension. If this instability leads to translation of the vertebral body, this is spondylolisthesis.
