Saint Lawrence, one of he most venerated Roman martyrs, celebrated for his Christian valor. He was executed during the persecution under the Roman emperor Valerian, and tradition holds that he was burned to death. His feast day is August 10, and he is the patron saint of the poor and of cooks.
In the province of Ontario, St. Lawrence is a prominent, historic neighbourhood in old centre of Toronto (formerly named York), now most known for the expansive St. Lawrence Market. The Laurentian Mountains gave rise to the name for the Laurential Plateau, or the Canadian Shield.
He ordered Deacon Lawrence to be burned alive, in public, on a griddle. Witnesses recorded the public martyrdom. The deacon cheerfully offered himself to the Lord Jesus and even joked with his executioners!

Who is Saint Lawrence? St. Lawrence was one of the seven deacons of the Roman Church responsible for the temporal administration of the diocese. He, along with Pope Sixtus II whom he served, was a victim of the persecution of Valerian in 258.
