One of the hallmarks of S. aureus is its ability to coagulate blood , allowing for clinical differentiation of S. aureus from coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CoNS) such as S. epidermidis . S. aureus secretes two soluble coagulases that interact with prothrombin to catalyze conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin ( McAdow et al., 2012b ).

Clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus secrete coagulases, polypeptides that bind to and activate prothrombin, thereby converting fibrinogen to fibrin and promoting the clotting of plasma or blood. Two staphylococcal products, the canonical ...
5 Αυγ 2010 · Coagulases are clotting factors that promote fibrin formation and bacterial persistence in host tissues. This article shows that coagulases are essential for S. aureus abscess formation and lethal sepsis, and that antibodies against them confer protection in mouse models.
Ideally a Gram stain of the colony should be performed and tests made for catalase and coagulase production, allowing the coagulase-positive S aureus to be identified quickly. Another very useful test for S aureus is the production of thermostable deoxyribonuclease.

16 Απρ 2019 · The two coagulases, von Willebrand factor binding protein (vWbp) and Coagulase (Coa), are critical virulence factors in several animal models of invasive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) infections. These proteins are part of an intricate system of proteins that S. aureus uses to assemble a fibrinogen (Fg)/fibrin protective shield surrounding ...
The unique capacity of S. aureus to induce clotting has been known for over a century; however, its role in virulence has long been controversial. S. aureus secretes two coagulases, staphylocoagulase and von Willebrand factor binding protein that both activate prothrombin to generate fibrin.
