4 Οκτ 2022 · The chapter begins by deriving the sonar equation for a number of scenarios, including animal acoustic communication, communication masking by noise, and acoustic surveying of animals. It introduces the concept of the layered ocean, presenting temperature, salinity, and resulting sound speed profiles.
The direction of sound propagation is determined by the sound speed gradients in the water. These speed gradients transform the sound wave through refraction, reflection, and dispersion. In the sea the vertical gradients are generally much larger than the horizontal ones.
Results emphasize that when choosing an underwater sound propagation model for practical applications in a complex shallow-water environment, a compromise will be made between the numerical model accuracy, computational time, and validity.

22 Μαρ 2022 · This work explores the impact of climate change in sound propagation by computing the three-dimensional global field of underwater sound speed. The computation was performed based on present conditions (2006–2016) and a “business-as-usual” future climate scenario (Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5), identifying two “acoustic ...
The underwater acoustic coastal environment is presented in views of seasonal climatology and potential interactions of sound waves with mesoscale and sub-mesoscale processes are examined. The sound speed profiles (SSPs) are com-puted from two-/three-dimensional underwater acoustic propagation models and
