For example, if you count 20 beats over 15 seconds, your heart rate is 80 bpm. For a more accurate measurement, take your pulse for 30 seconds and multiple by two.
In adults, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include: Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath. Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen. Sudden dizziness. Confusion. Severe or persistent vomiting. Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough.

For the most critical medical situations — like a heart attack or stroke — call 911 for an ambulance. You should not drive yourself if you’re suffering severe chest pain or impaired vision, bleeding severely or if you might faint.
