The vital capacity represents the change in volume from completely emptied lungs to completely filled lungs. In human medicine, vital capacity is an important measure of a person’s respiratory health.
Vital capacity (VC) is the maximum amount of air a person can expel from the lungs after a maximum inhalation. It is equal to the sum of inspiratory reserve volume, tidal volume, and expiratory reserve volume.

Vital capacity is the volume of air which can be exhaled from the lungs. The capacity of forced expiration during 1 s is called FEV1. In a normal adult, the FEV1 is slightly more than 3 L in volume. On the other hand, asthmatic patients usually have a reduced vital capacity and FEV1 is reduced to about one-third.
