30 Οκτ 2019 · Vomiting is a common symptom of many conditions. Most often, vomiting in both adults and babies is a result of an infection called gastroenteritis, indigestion, or food poisoning.
Nausea and vomiting in adults isn’t usually a sign of anything serious. It tends to only last 1 or 2 days. Vomiting is the body’s way of getting rid of harmful substances from the stomach, or it may be a reaction to something that has irritated the gut.
The most common cause of nausea and vomiting is viral gastroenteritis, often called the stomach flu. Get emergency care if nausea or vomiting is accompanied by: Chest pain lasting more than a few minutes. Shortness of breath. Severe abdominal pain or cramping. Blurred vision. Confusion.
Vomiting is a forceful contraction of the stomach that propels its contents up the esophagus and out the mouth. (See also Vomiting in Infants and Children.) Vomiting empties the stomach and often makes people with nausea feel considerably better, at least temporarily. Vomiting is quite uncomfortable and can be violent.
