During the Crusades, beginning at the end of the 11th century, there were developments of flags. During the first crusade banners were used by kings and nobles in an extensions of the practices in Europe with the addition of some holy orders adopting them.
The historic annual flag charts provide an overview of the world's major national and cultural flags for every year since 1848. The main chart gives a snapshot of the flags flown on December 31 st of each year, and the Events section below lists any changes that happened in the preceding twelve months.

While the origin of the flag remains a mystery, the oldest flag discovered is made of bronze: a Derafsh or 'flag-like' Shahdad, which was found in Shahdad, Iran, and dates back to c. 2400 BC. It features a seated man and a kneeling woman facing each other, with a star in between.
