O1 tool steel is an oil hardening, cold work general purpose steel with easy machining properties and low hardening temperatures compared to other grades. O1 provides good wear resistance and toughness sufficient for standard tool and die applications making it a suitable choice for tooling with good tool life and econimcal production.
The density of 01 steel is 7.85 g/cm3 (0.283 lb/in3); Rockwell C hardness is 50 HRC; Ultimate tensile strength 1690 MPa (245 ksi), Yield strength 1500 MPa (218 ksi), based on oil quenched at 800°C, tempered at 425°C. O1 steel composition is listed in the table below. The heat treating of O1 tool steel is listed below.
O1 Tool Steel is the original oil-hardening, “non-shrinking” tool steel that can be hardened to the Rockwell C 65 range from a low austenitizing temperature. O1 is a general-purpose tool steel that is typically used in applications where alloy steels cannot provide sufficient hardness, strength, and wear resistance.
Tempering of O1 steels is performed at 177-260°C (350-500°F) to realize Rockwell C hardness of 62 to 57. Martempering is a substitute hardening procedure which can be used along with suitable salt bath equipment. O1 steels are mainly used for short run tooling for cold forming dies, blanking dies, and cutting tools operating at ambient temperature.

Steel O1 is a Tool Steel (High-alloy steel) that has on top of the 0.9% of carbon an additional 2.3% of manganese, chromium, nickel, tungsten (See details in the below table). Steel O1 has a machinability rating of 42%. Steel O1 belongs to the "O series" of tool steels.
Preheat thoroughly to 1200-1250°F and then raise temperature to 1450°F - 1500°F depending on section size. Hold until uniformly heated through. Use high side of hardening range for thicker sections. Quench in warm thin quenching oil to about 125oF.
