The managers of Baal's cause were 450 men, fat and well fed (v. 22), besides 400 more, their supporters or seconds, v. 19. The manager of God's cause was but one man, lately a poor exile, hardly kept from starving; so that God's cause has nothing to support it but its own right.

Elijah realized that he was not the only prophet of Yahweh who remained in Israel (1 Kings 18:22; cf. 1 Kings 18:13), but in this situation the odds were one against 450. There are several similarities between Judges 4, 7 and 1 Kings 18.
1 Kings 18:19-21. Christ or Belial! Here is a curious phenomenon. A monarch, who had searched all kingdoms for a prophet that he might reek anger upon his life, now sought out and confronted by that prophet, and submitting to his orders to call an assembly of the nation!
