Women in like manner must be grave, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. Hervey summarized the three possible meanings of this verse, making it applicable to: (1) the wives of the deacons; (2) the wives of the elders and deacons; or (3) the women deacons.
1 Timothy 3. In this chapter our apostle treats of church-officers. He specifies, I. The qualifications of a person to be admitted to the office of a bishop, ver 1-7. II. The qualifications of deacons ( ver 8-10), and of their wives (ver 11), again of the deacons, ver 12, 13. III.
Since the church is also called a household (1 Tim. 3:15) it makes sense that household leadership has been proven in their own homes. The elder takes the role of the father in the household in relation to the household of God.
