30 Νοε 2018 · The British acquired Cyprus for strategic reasons in 1888, and the island has provided a valuable strategic base up to this day. During World War II, Cyprus faced the danger of a German invasion. The loyalty of the Greek population on the island could not be taken for granted.
The Regiment disembarked in Cyprus on 5 May 1941 and on 6 May the Regiment’s heavy equipment and transport arrived. Preparations to defeat the German invader began. On 10 May 1941 the Regiment moved to its main camp at Athaslassa, outside Nicosia.
British Cyprus was bombed by the Axis powers on several occasions during World War II. The island was weakly defended against aerial attack. It had no anti-aircraft artillery and very few aircraft. [1] The main threat came from the Italian Dodecanese.
