The following is a complete list of the 22 metropolitan areas in Florida, as defined by the United States Office of Management and Budget. The largest, the Miami metropolitan area, is the ninth-largest among metropolitan areas in the U.S.
This list tracks and ranks the population of the top 10 largest cities and other urban places in the United States by decade, as reported by each decennial United States census, starting with the 1790 Census.
Complicating matters is determining exactly where the metro area boundaries fall and what cities should be included. For example, I list Newark as the 10th largest city in the US in 1860, but in 1870 it is (somewhat arbitraily) included as part of the New York metro area, so it falls off the chart. Salem and Boston have a simliar pattern.
