In 1998, NFPA 10R, Recommended Practice for Portable Fire Extinguishing Equipment in Family Dwelling Units and Living Units, was withdrawn. Information on this topic was incorporated as an annex of NFPA 10. This standard was revised in 2002. The 2007 edition of this standard was a complete revision.

A new requirement regarding maintenance of hose stations that are used in lieu of extinguishers has been added. The fire classification marking system is expanded to include markings for extinguishers rated for Class AC and Class AK.
