Maritime Organization (IMO) Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing and the ship’s manual should be used in conjunction with the Code. This guide has been designed for use alongside the ship’s own Cargo Securing Manual, and together with IMO and other publications.

The purpose of the CSS Code is to provide an international standard to promote the safe stowage and securing of cargoes by: advising on actions which may be taken to remedy the effects of cargo shifting.
With the entry into force, on 1 July 1998, of the 1994 amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), 1974, which introduced a new chapter IX into the Convention, the International Safety Management (ISM) Code was made mandatory.
10.1 The Company should establish procedures to ensure that the ship is maintained in conformity with the provisions of the relevant rules and regulations and with any additional requirements which may be established by the Company.
STCW Convention regulation VI/6 came into effect on January 1,2014 and this applies to all persons employed or engaged in any capacity on ships, prior to being assigned shipboard duties and, seafarer who is designated to perform Security duties as stated in the Ship Security Plan.
1. Ship Type and Application of the ISM Code The date of mandatory application of the ISM Code for each ship type is specified in Regulation 2, Chapter IX of the SOLAS Convention.
