Traditional American usage (which was also adapted from French usage but at a later date), Canadian, and modern British usage assign new names for each power of one thousand (the short scale). Thus, a billion is 1000 × 1000 2 = 10 9; a trillion is 1000 × 1000 3 = 10 12; and so forth.
Short form numbering is based on thousands and Long form is based on millions. Because of this, in Short form a billion is one thousand millions (10 9) while in Long form it is one million millions (10 12). The change in the United Kingdom to Short form numbering happened in 1974.
One trillion equals 1,000,000,000,000, i.e. one million million, and on the short scale, we write this as 10 12 (ten to the twelfth power). This is one thousand times larger than the short scale billion, and this number is now generally referred to as one trillion.
