In late 1943, Fifteenth Air Force was newly established in the Mediterranean theater as a strategic air force. The new air force drew its operational units from existing air forces in the European and Mediterranean theaters and commenced combat operations the day after it was formed.
30 Μαΐ 2022 · The Fifteenth Air Force was one of two Strategic Air forces in Europe, along with the Eighth Air Force. It was established on 1 November 1943 in Tunis, Tunisia, and commenced combat operations the following day.
In September 1943, the USAAF formed the Fifteenth Air Force, uniting its Mediterranean heavy bomber forces together at bases in southern Italy. The USAAF could now mount major strategic raids in southern and eastern Europe, creating even more pressure on the Luftwaffe defense.

Fifteenth Air Force was established on 1 November 1943 as part of the United States Army Air Forces in the World War II Mediterranean Theater of Operations as a strategic air force and commenced combat operations the day after it was formed. The first commander was General Jimmy Doolittle.
