While most examples are quite common, some rare varieties and top condition specimens are surprisingly valuable. In fact, the most expensive 1943 steel penny ever sold at auction brought a staggering $138,000!
25 Οκτ 2024 · A coin graded MS66 is valued by the PCGS at $45, rising to $200 at MS67, and $5,000 at MS68. But the finest known examples of Philadelphia 1943 steel pennies are graded half a point higher, at MS68+. The PCGS has certified three coins at this level, and one of those was presented at auction in 2020.
The value of 1943 Steel Pennies in circulated conditions ranges from $0.05 to $1. Those in common uncirculated conditions are worth up to $27, however, in the highest grades, these coins can fetch up to $35,000. To date, the highest price ever realized for a 1943 steel penny was $33,600 in 2020 at Stack’s Bowers.
20 Comments. The 1943 Penny was a Wheat Cent, named for the design on its tails side. Also, technically, all 1943 Pennies were meant to be Steel Cents aka Steelies. But because it was a transition year, some varieties were coined in bronze, and this drastically raised their prices!
