20 Comments. The 1943 Penny was a Wheat Cent, named for the design on its tails side. Also, technically, all 1943 Pennies were meant to be Steel Cents aka Steelies. But because it was a transition year, some varieties were coined in bronze, and this drastically raised their prices!
