One of the rarest 1944 pennies, the 1944 Steel Penny with transitional error, was auctioned at an astonishing price of $408,000 in 2021.
The 1944 D Mint Mark Wheat Penny has a little “D” mark on them, meaning that the penny was minted at the Denver mint. It struck around 430, 578, 000 coins, marking the eighth-highest year of production and making it a not-so-rare collectible.

The best way to identify this error is to note the "D" mintmark stamped on top of a subtle "S" mint mark (D/S OMM). The location of the "S" is depicted by the arrow in the example image above where part of the "S" is best seen above the "D".
