The Toyota 2000GT is a limited-production front mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive, two-door, two-seat sports car / grand tourer designed by Toyota in collaboration with Yamaha. First displayed to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1965, the 2000GT was manufactured under contract by Yamaha between 1967 and 1970.
The straight six engine was fitted in an X-backbone type chassis which was very similar to a Lotus Elan chassis. Other features included a cross-ratio 5-speed transmission, limited slip differential, and Japan's first 4-wheel disc brakes with vacuum booster. In October 1966 the 2000GT proved its class in an endurance run of 78 hours.

Toyota handled the overall layout and design for the car, along with the basic parameters, while Yamaha, under the direction of Toyota, was primarily responsible for improving engine performance and for detailed design of the body and chassis.
1 Ιαν 2020 · Engine / Gearbox. The M-series straight six engine fitted to the 2000 GT was based on the flagship Toyota Crown powerplant. In the pursuit of greater output, the Crown unit was substantially modified. Most significant was the presence of a special Yamaha-designed aluminium twin cam head with wide 79° valves and hemispherical combustion chambers.

While Toyota’s stylists produced the stunning body shape, Yamaha set to work on the engine, turning the daily mundane 2-litre Crown unit into something fit for a sports car. They did so by combining a trio of Mikuni-Solex twin-choke carburettors with a new aluminium DOHC head and a pair of chain-driven cams.
