Women competed in the 3000 metre steeplechase for the first time. Marathon open water swimming events for men and women, over the distance of 10 kilometres, were added to the swimming discipline. Team events (men and women) in table tennis replaced the doubles events. [3]
Two of those were medalists from the 2008 Summer Olympics: silver medalist Mariya Abakumova in the women's javelin throw and Denis Alekseyev, who was in the Russian bronze medal team for the men's 4 × 400 m relay.
nb Note: Marion Jones was stripped of all her Olympic medals. In 2008 the Russian team of Evgeniya Polyakova, Aleksandra Fedoriva, Yulia Gushchina, and Yuliya Chermoshanskaya were initially awarded the gold medals. However, the medals were rescinded in 2016 following disqualification of Chermoshanskaya for use of performance-enhancing drugs.
7 Αυγ 2008 · In 2008, in the 800m final, Rebecca Adlington improved on the previous time by more than two seconds, with a new time of 8:14.10. She took the gold medal in the 800m and in the 400m, and became the first British gold medallist in women’s swimming since 1960.
In addition to Bolt and the Jamaican men’s 4×100 relay, Shelly-Ann Fraser won the women’s 100, leading a Jamaican medal sweep, Veronica Campbell-Brown won the women’s 200, followed by Kerron Stewart who won a bronze, Shericka Williams took bronze in the women’s 400, and Melaine Walker won the women’s 400 hurdles.
Individually, China's [Zou Kai] won three golds on the men's side, while among the women, the big medal winners were Americans [Nastia Liukin], with five medals (one gold), and [Shawn Johnson], with four medals and one gold.
