Officials of former host cities are trying to think of what to do with the dozens of expensive Olympic venues on which they spent billions to avoid abandoned Olympic stadiums in their city. In some cities, these abandoned Olympic sites are repurposed into state-of-the-art sporting facilities.

1 Αυγ 2021 · And the Smithsonian magazine reports that the USA has more than one Olympic venue with a surprising afterlife, including the Grand Olympic Auditorium from the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, which was used as a set in the film Rocky (1976).
After the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2016 Summer Paralympics, many of its Olympic venues remained abandoned and unused just 6 months after the events. Many of its photos depict of venues being run-down as a result of neglect from officials, including the Maracanã Stadium where it was largely abandoned (which has since been repaired as of 2024).
