Addition with Regrouping Strategy #3: Number Line Strategy. Using an open number line to solve two-digit numbers addition with regrouping math problems is the third strategy I’m going to share. This strategy focuses on “hopping” along a number line to solve for the sum of a given problem.
These strategies help develop fluency and a deeper number sense. This post covers the top tips and tricks on how to teach addition strategies that 1st & 2nd-grade students learn to use when solving addition equations.
The abstract stage focuses on solving problems using abstract symbols and algorithms, AKA, mental math. This is where students would simply solve an addition with regrouping problem, such as 45+38 using the standard algorithm and “carry” a ten over to the tens place when they need to regroup.
The regrouping method for 3-digit addition is one of my favorite things I teach my 2nd grade students. I love how students can use place value concepts and find patterns that help them add using the regrouping method.
The 3-digit mental math addition strategy has students break the numbers in the equation down to add the hundreds, tens, and ones together. They add those to get the expanded form of a number. Then students can easily use mental math to put that number in standard form.

Place value understanding is key, as students will be grouping the tens and then the ones. For example, to solve 24+53, we will first add 20+50 to make 70, then 4+3 to make 7, and finally 70+7 to make 77.
