The dances of the ancient times are characterized as dances of war or dances of peace. The latter are distinguished in dances of theater, religious and worshiping dances, martial dances, symposia dances, mourning dances, etc.
Greek mythology weaves a wonderful tale about how dance began. Before man, Titans inhabited the earth. Titan goddess Rhea, wife of the god Cronus, taught the art of dance to the Kouretes, sons of Earth who dwelled on the island of Crete, and to the Corybantes who lived in Phrygia in Asia Minor.
The 16th-and 17th-century philologists saw the ancient Greek dance as a primarily religious phenomenon, and as a means of physical education and training, although other uses of the dance, for instance theatrical, were being recognized as such.
