This document is designed to provide basic information on radiation mechanisms, the dose from various medical radiation sources, the magnitude and type of risk, as well as answers to commonly asked questions (e.g radiation and pregnancy). As a matter of ease in reading, the text is in a question and answer format.
When appropriately harnessed, ionizing radiation also has a number of useful applications in medicine, which can increase our exposure. However, in affecting the atoms of living things, this form of radiation poses a health risk, through potential damage to tissue, genes and DNA.
How do we use radioisotopes in medicine? Some radioisotopes that decay with alpha or beta radiation are used for treating diseases such as cancer. Others that decay with gamma or positron radiation are used in conjunction with powerful medical scanners and cameras to take images of processes and structures inside the body for disease diagnosis.
Diagnostic Applications Of Ionizing Radiation. The diagnostic uses of ionizing radiation are classified below under two basic headings: radiology and nuclear medicine. In radiology, the radiation administered is external to the patient; in nuclear medicine, it is internal.
Nuclear medicine is a field of medicine that uses a trace amount of radioactive substances called radioisotopes for the diagnosis and treatment of many health conditions such as certain types of cancer, and neurological and heart diseases.
