In September 1888, a young African American traveled from Wilmington, North Carolina to Boston, Massachusetts to sit the examination for entrance to MIT. Robert Robinson Taylor was brimming with enthusiasm, despite skepticism on the part of friends and relatives back home.

Robert Robinson Taylor (June 8, 1868 – December 13, 1942) was the first known black student to attend and graduate from MIT. He enrolled in 1888 and graduated with the Class of 1892. Taylor is also considered to be the first accredited, academically trained African-American architect.

Robert R. (Robinson) Taylor (June 8, 1868-December 20, 1942), a native of Wilmington, N. C., was a pioneering black architect of national renown, regarded as the first academically trained black architect in the United States and the first black student to graduate from MIT.

Taylor may have chosen to incorporate large Greek and Roman columns as a challenge to the framers of Alabama's 1901 Constitution, which essentially disfranchised almost all African Americans and most poor whites from the electoral process.

He is one of the earliest African American architects, and the first black man to graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1892. Originally from North Carolina, Taylor was the son of a slaveowner and a black mother.
