As a seventh generation console, the PSP competed with the Nintendo DS.
Sony also introduced extended 1400 mAh batteries during the lifetime of the PSP-3000 (akin to the PSP-1000's extended 2200 mAh battery), which are also compatible with the 1000/2000 series. The more notible differences between the 2000 and 3000 are in the hardware & firmware security.

It is generally considered the best of the PSP models overall, though if you're looking for homebrew capability, the PSP-1000 is still superior.
