The engine was introduced on April 17, 1969. About 8,600 Boss 302 engines were built. The Boss 302 block was essentially the next generation of 289 High Performance hardware, but features a forged steel crankshaft, 4-bolt main caps, and screw-in freeze plugs.
The Ford small-block V8-based 1969–70 302 H.O. "Boss 302" engine was developed in 1968 for the SCCA's 1969 Trans-Am road racing series. Available only in the Boss 302 Mustang, it derived from a line that traced to the Ford 289 HiPo engine, not a stock "Windsor" 302.
