The .308 Norma Magnum (7.62×65mmBR) cartridge was created by Nils Kvale at Norma, Sweden. Like the larger .358 Norma Magnum it is based on a shortened 300 H&H magnum. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] It very closely resembled the wildcat .30-338 Magnum cartridge.
The .308 Winchester / 7.62x51mm NATO was created in 1952 and is based on the .300 savage round a round created in 1920. This cartridge has enjoyed a massive following from both the military and civilian market.
