Ampacity is the maximum current that a conductor can carry continuously under the conditions of use without exceeding its temperature rating. Cerrowire's ampacity chart helps calculate the load requirement for a circuit.
Ampacity-wise, the 4/0 AWG gauge wire can handle the largest amount of current of any AWG gauge wire. At 75°C, the 4/0 copper wire ampacity is 230 amp (with 195 amps and 260 amps at 60°C and 90°C temperature, respectively). You can consult the electrical wire size chart above to find all this data.
In the list of standard sizes as integers, 4/0 (0000) is the largest diameter and 40AWG is the smallest diameter printed on AWG. In addition, there are some special gauges such as 0000 (4/0), 000 (3/0), 00 (2/0) used for wire diameter and thickness larger than 0AWG.
Type of metal wire is made out of (copper or aluminum). As we will see in the NEC ampacity chart, copper wires can handle more amps than same-size aluminum wires. That’s because copper has a lower resistivity (1.72 × 10 -8 Ohm×m at 68°F) than aluminum (2.65 × 10 -8 Ohm×m at 68°F).
NEC provides tables for adjusting allowable ampacities when the ambient temperature deviates from an expected range for the temp rating of the conductor, as well as for number of conductors in raceways or cable trays, when part of the wire is exposed to sun or wind, etc.
