Photographer Nicholas Nixon, the husband to Bebe Brown, took a photo of his wife and her three sisters Heather, Mimi, and Laurie, in 1975.
In an exclusive conversation with LensCulture, Nixon talks about why he threw away the first photo of “The Brown Sisters,” imparts some invaluable wisdom gained from 40+ years of making portraits—and reveals the moments when you need to put down the camera and simply be present.
Once a year, for 40 years, the Brown sisters have had their portrait taken—listen to the photographer speak about this simple, yet amazing series of photographs. In August of 1974, the photographer Nicholas Nixon made a group portrait of his wife, Bebe, and her three sisters, Heather, Mimi, and Laurie—the Brown sisters.
The very first photograph features the four sisters- Heather, Mimi, Bebe, and Laurie – in a beautifully arranged composition, each sister radiating their unique personality. At the time, their ages spanned from fifteen to twenty-five, representing a range of youthful exuberance and budding adulthood.
