9 Οκτ 2024 · When evaluating centerfire rifle cartridges, it’s a good idea to analyze the cartridge specs to gain more knowledge of each. Both the 45-90 Winchester and 45-70 Government (or "Govt" for short) were originally designed as black powder cartridges for long range shooting and big game hunting.
All of these cartridges used standard .458" diameter bullets. The .45-90 was virtually identical to the .45-70 with a longer case, and .45-70 ammunition can safely be fired in .45-90 rifles. This was quite useful on the frontier, where .45-70 Government ammunition was widely distributed, and made the Sharps .45-90 a popular buffalo rifle.
20 Απρ 2020 · Bullets for the .45-90. My preferred bullet is the Lyman ‘Postell’ (535 grains) which gives superb accuracy in this rifle. I cast them from a mix of 30 parts lead to 1 part tin. I also occasionally use paper-patched bullets but this further complicates the process and doesn’t give quite the same degree of accuracy as the Postell.
7 Αυγ 2018 · As we expected, the .45-90 could push some bullets somewhat faster than the 45-70, but with the proper bullets, either could cleanly any game in Africa! One pleasant surprise was the .45-90 performance of the Alaska Bulletworks 450 grain heavy jacket .45-70 bullet at 2150 fps.
