8 Ιαν 2012 · I bought my Miroku/Winchester 1886 .45-90 with 26" full octagon barrel at 9.5 pounds, with the express intent(pun intended) of hunting with it with both standard and heavy loads.
25 Μαΐ 2021 · Needing help for 45-90 smokeless load data for 405 and 540 grain cast bullets. I’m shooting a rebarreled 1885 Hi-Wall and particularly interested in 4198 and 3031 info. I have shot BP in it and it shoots well, I’m just interested in trying smokeless too.
From approximately a 1,300 fps baseline load, load additional rounds in lots of four, adding 1.5 grains of powder each time for each lot of four cartridges. I adjust the compression die down each time I add powder or wads to maintain the correct cartridge overall length.
At the muzzle, the 45-90 is packing 3,377 ft-lbs of energy compared to 2,754 ft-lbs for the 45-70. The increased muzzle energy allows the 45-90 to have a slightly longer effective range. The 45 90 can maintain 1,000 ft-lbs of energy, which is the recommended minimum for deer, to a little further than 400 yards.
This is about how I load the .45-90 for long-range target competition, exclusively. It is not how I load other BPCR rifles for other types of competition.
