For each combination of span and thickness (or Span Rating), loads are given for deflections of L/360, L/240 and L/180, and maximum loads controlled by bend-ing and shear capacity. Uniform loads for some applications can be read directly from the tables.
To qualify for a given Span Rating under the standards, a panel must meet all of the criteria for that rating. As a result, mechanical properties that are characteristic of APA structural-use panels are actually greater than the minimum necessary to pass one criterion.
There are three possible span conditions to consider when computing the uniform load capacities of structural-use panels depending on the size and orientation of the panel and the spacing of the framing support members.
SPAN RATINGS. APA RATED SHEATHING, APA RATED STURD-I-FLOOR and APA RATED SIDING carry numbers in their trademarks called Span Ratings. These denote the maximum recommended center-to-center spacing in inches of supports over which the panels should be placed in construction applications.
APA Rated Sheathing panels are produced as plywood or oriented strand board (OSB). Typical size is 4 ft x 8 ft, but other sizes may also be produced. As the table shows, no 2×8’s meet the span and spacing requirements, but a 2×10 with an E of 1,300,000 psi and Fb of 1093 psi can span 15 feet 3 inches – more than enough. A 2×12 with an E of 800,000 psi and Fb of 790 psi also works, since it can span 15 feet and 10 inches.
The standard classifies panels by bond classification, span rating, performance category, and grade. It provides test methods, a glossary of trade terms and definitions, and a quality certification program whereby agencies inspect, sample, and test products for conformance to this standard.
