APA Rated Sheathing panels are produced as plywood or oriented strand board (OSB). Typical size is 4 ft x 8 ft, but other sizes may also be produced. Commonly square edge, but may be produced with tongue and groove edges. 2.4 Common Performance Categories And Corresponding Span Ratings Performance Category Span Rating 3/8 24/0 7/16 24/16
SPAN RATINGS. APA RATED SHEATHING, APA RATED STURD-I-FLOOR and APA RATED SIDING carry numbers in their trademarks called Span Ratings. These denote the maximum recommended center-to-center spacing in inches of supports over which the panels should be placed in construction applications.
Loads are provided for applica tions where the panel strength axis is applied across supports and applied parallel to supports. For each combina tion of span and Span Rating, loads are given for deflections of L/360, L/240 and L/180 and maximum loads controlled by bending and shear capacity.
Use the two-span condition for support spacing greater than 16 inches but no greater than 24 inches on center. Use the single-span condition for support spacing greater than 24 inches on center. The formulas presented are for computing uniform loads on structural-use panels applied over conventional framing.
For each combination of span and thickness (or Span Rating), loads are given for deflections of L/360, L/240 and L/180, and maximum loads controlled by bend-ing and shear capacity. Uniform loads for some applications can be read directly from the tables.
Span is permitted to be 24 inches on center where 3 / 4 -inch wood strip flooring is installed at right angles to joist. Span is permitted to be 24 inches on center for floors where 1 1 / 2 inches of cellular or lightweight concrete is applied over the panels. TABLE 2304.8 (4)
APA Rated Sheathing panels are assessed for performance as sheathing in roofs, subfloors and walls. Panels are assigned a Span Rating, which is primarily a mea- sure of panel stiffness and strength paral- lel to the major panel strength axis (usually the long dimension).
