26 Ιουλ 2017 · 5. 5 In addition to the soil parent material, origin of soil is also dependent upon other prevailing processes affecting soil formation. Climatic conditions are important factors affecting both the form and rate of physical and chemical weathering of the parent material.
Soil (s) is therefore a function of the above factors or: s= f (cl, p, t, r, o) also referred to as Jenney’s five soil forming factors. The factors can be studies by holding 4 factors constant and varying only one. E.g. if climate alone is varied, then the range of soils formed is a climosequence.

Soil formation is affected by five main factors: 1) Parent material - the original rock or substance the soil develops from, such as alluvium or loess. 2) Climate - weathering processes from temperature, precipitation, etc. influence soil formation. Chemical weathering changes molecular structure.
The active soil forming factors are those which supply energy that acts on the mass for the purpose of soil formation. These factors are climate and vegetation (biosphere).
