This puzzle is packaged with a tray for the 4-piece solution and the 5th piece loose; perhaps to guide the solvers thinking away from the 5-piece solution. The directions on a 4.5 inch square card inserted into the back give an interesting discussion of the geometry:

The first puzzle uses all five pieces to make a square. Hint 1 : Different sizes of squares can be made with some or all of the pieces. However, a square can be made that uses all five pieces, side by side, with none of the pieces on top or over lapping another piece.

25 Μαρ 2020 · It’s very easy to generate a puzzle like this by making a Latin square and chopping it up into whatever layout you want. In retrospect, it seems that the key to making this puzzle was picking a layout that was sufficiently off the beaten path.
This is a classic puzzle precision cut from 1/4" thick alder wood. Very interesting in that 4 of the 5 pieces will make a perfect square. Also all 5 of the pieces will make a slightly larger square. Pretty tricky and somewhat addicting as you set out to do the 5 pc square. MEasures 4" x 4" x 1/4" when solved.
