To mark the International Day for Biodiversity, here are five reasons why biodiversity matters to humans – and why we need to protect it.
Biodiversity is essential for the processes that support all life on Earth, including humans. Without a wide range of animals, plants and microorganisms, we cannot have the healthy ecosystems that we rely on to provide us with the air we breathe and the food we eat.
10 Σεπ 2021 · Biodiversity is suffering due to – you guessed it! – human activity. This includes everything from over-fishing and over-hunting to pollution, climate change, agriculture and overdevelopment. We know that global populations of animals and plants are under huge threat.
Biodiversity is the variability among living organisms from all sources, including terrestrial, marine, and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part; this includes diversity within species, between species, and of ecosystems.
Biodiversity is important to most aspects of our lives. We value biodiversity for many reasons, some utilitarian, some intrinsic. This means we value biodiversity both for what it provides to humans, and for the value it has in its own right.
But what does biodiversity mean, and why is it so important to us? What are the causes and effects of biodiversity loss? And more importantly, what can we do to protect it?
