2 Ιουν 2024 · Fifth metacarpal neck fractures (FMCNFs) are common among paediatric patients. Complications include reduced metacarpophalangeal (MCP) range of motion and grip strength, which impede the hand’s functional abilities.
Metacarpal neck fractures typically result from a patient striking a solid surface with a clenched fist causing volar comminution and dorsal apex angulation (12, 13). The most frequent scenario encountered is a fracture of fifth metacarpal neck otherwise known as the “boxer’s fracture.”

Conservative management is the preferred option for closed, non-angulated, non-malrotated fractures while open fractures, significant angulation, rotational deformity, and intra-articular extension are recognised indications for surgical intervention.
