The 6.5x55 is one of the great worldwide hunting cartridges. It offers excellent killing power, adequately flat trajectory, and moderate recoil. A best seller in Scandinavia, it is also popular all across Europe, Africa, Australia, and the New World.
The 6.5x55 is the most versatile and flexible of these cartridges and, despite its age, it is a modern looking cartridge. (See illustration at top of page.) However, all three can launch a 140 grain hunting bullet (SD .287) at around 2700 fps at moderate pressure, muzzle blast and recoil.

The attraction of the 6.5×55 is it's mild recoil and superb down-range performance. Ample bullet selection — 90 to 160 grain — gives the cartridge plenty of versatility and makes it a gem for reloaders. A higher sectional density gives the 6.5 better penetration than other caliber bullets of a similar weight.
9 Ιαν 2009 · If you read the articles that JAYB pointed out and others by Chuck Hawks you'll see that the great African hunter Bell used to drop Elephants with great regularity with the 6.5, excellent sectional density being one of the biggest over rideing factors of this calibres performance!
