At present, the highest performance, short action, 6.5mm cartridges are the 6.5mm-284 and 6.5mm Rem. Magnum. The 6.5-284 is based on a necked-down .284 Winchester case and the 6.5mm Rem. Mag. is based on a shortened and necked-down 7mm Remington Magnum case.
The 6.5mm Creedmoor (circa 2008) is another short action match cartridge that is loaded to higher pressure to compete with the .260 and 6.5x55, which have greater case capacity. Heavily promoted by Hornady, the 6.5 Creedmoor has successfully caught the attention of hunters and rifle manufacturers.

Ample bullet selection — 90 to 160 grain — gives the cartridge plenty of versatility and makes it a gem for reloaders. A higher sectional density gives the 6.5 better penetration than other caliber bullets of a similar weight.
9 Ιαν 2009 · If you read the articles that JAYB pointed out and others by Chuck Hawks you'll see that the great African hunter Bell used to drop Elephants with great regularity with the 6.5, excellent sectional density being one of the biggest over rideing factors of this calibres performance!
