The date code is located on the Left hand side of the pistol and is represented by two letters. Below is the date coding chart. The letter will correspond with the number.

Using their 2 number codes, it is possible to identify the type of firearm (belt-fed machinegun, submachinegun, etc) and the caliber. Here is how the code system breaks out:

HK pistols use a two letter date code to identify the year of manufacture. This USP Full Size .40S&W has a date code of KH putting its manufacture year at 1997. This p30 is much newer with a date code of BD putting its manufacture year at 2013.

The most obvious thing is the Serial Number. It will appear on both the slide and frame. It is XX826 on the left image, 86912 on the right image. More about Serial Numbers is below. The next thing you might notice is the US importer, HK in Chantilly, VA. US importers are required to stamp or engrave their name on any guns they import.
