An 8 bore is a .835 in (21.2 mm) caliber firearm. Historically it was used to fire solid projectiles from smoothbores, rifles, and partially rifled ball and shot guns, as well as shot from muzzle-loading and breech-loading shotguns. Later breech loaders were designed to fire cartridges.
3 Μαΐ 2018 · So for those of you interested, a light load would be 2-3/4 dram equivalent powder load with a 7/8oz or 1oz shot weight in a 12ga. This can actually have less recoil than a 20ga. Since most 20ga shells are 7/8 oz but go out a smaller diameter bore the same load in a twelve gauge with a larger diameter bore will have less felt recoil.

Today’s 12-gauge shells come in 2½-, 2¾-, 3- and 3½-inch lengths (and they all hold different amounts of powder and shot charges). If your shotgun is marked “12-gauge 2¾-inch” you may safely fire 2½- and 2¾-inch 12-gauge shotshells, but not the 3- or 3½-inch.
