16 Οκτ 2021 · What can you tell me about this. top rib is marked "Henry Tolley London fine Twist"...it chambers an 8 ga. shell and has 36" barrels (weighs about 25 lbs)
A very good J & W. Tolley, double 8-bore, hammer gun. 36” steel barrels by Thomas Bland & Sons, the action with through lumps and rebounding back-locks engraved with scrolls and vignettes of wildfowl in natural settings. The metalwork retains a high percentage of original finish, screw and pin slots line-up correctly and are in good condition.
25 Ιουν 2017 · Why would a maker like Tolley go to the length and expense of making a hammer gun in the late 1870s with a near-obsolete action and a new patent bolting mechanism and finish it to such a beautifully high standard?
19 Μαΐ 2007 · General Specs: J & W Tolley, Year 1885+-, 8 Gauge, 10lbs 3oz, Chokes Xtra Full. Serial Number: 6112. J. & W. Tolley was an English gunmaker of some notoriety, mostly noted for large bore waterfowlers. From about 1894 through 1903 they occupied a London address and that was when this gun was made.
3 Οκτ 2023 · The 8 gauge was considered the standard caliber on all dangerous game besides elephants (the 4 gauge was reserved for pachyderms). These side-by-side guns typically weighed about 15 pounds, but I am sure the weight was welcomed when touching off a shell.
