  1. 9 Μαρ 2023 · Exploring the manufacturer stamps of a Mauser K98 is an art of deciphering the markings. A trained eye can recognize each stamp and its purpose, yet to the untrained eye, it can be a daunting task.

  2. 23 Μαΐ 2023 · Fairly confident in saying it's a capture of some sort, likely Russian given the stamped serial number in the stock, electropenciled bolt and trigger guard and mismatched bottom metal.

  3. 17 Μαρ 2018 · I picked it up on Gunbroker for something reasonable for what I figured was a Russian capture. Bore is sharp and headspace checks out, so it is a shooter, which is all I wanted. Now I'm trying to decode some of the markings. It has a matching receiver and barrel and nothing else.

  4. I don't have it handy, but if I remember later, I'll pull out my copy of Serbian and Yugoslav Mauser Rifles by Branko Bogdanović. These markings are almost certainly identified. If I recall correctly from memory, they are all relatively insignificant markings applied during refurb. Just proof/inspection marks.

  5. The example shown here is a Russian capture K-98k. A Russian capture is the most commonly commercially available K-98k in the United States. The Russians “refurbished” these captured rifles after the war re-bluing the metal and refinishing the wood with a kind of deeply stained shellac.

  6. 17 Σεπ 2017 · I have recently decided to add some K98's to my horde. I have a nice original dot 44 coming and I want to buy a shooter RC K98. The RC seems to be good value but the markings are confusing to say the least. Some have the X stamps others do not.

  7. K98k is a bolt-action rifle chambered for the 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge. It remained the primary German service rifle until the end of the war in 1945. Millions were captured by the Soviets at the conclusion of World War II and were widely distributed as military aid.
